چکیده

We explore the combined effects of a climate threshold (a potential ocean thermohaline circulation collapse), parameter uncertainty, and learning in an optimal economic growth model. Our analysis shows that significantly reducing carbon dioxide ðCO2Þ emissions may be justified to avoid or delay even small (and arguably realistic) damages from an uncertain and irreversible climate change—even when future learning about the system is considered. Parameter uncertainty about the threshold specific damages and the CO2 level triggering a threshold can act to decrease near-term CO2 abatements that maximize expected utility. r 2003 Elsevier Inc. What is the Economic Value of Information about Uncertain Climate Thresholds? or How a Parallel Stochastic Optimization Algorithm Solves a Nonconvex, Non-di erentiable, and Global Problem BY ADAM SCOTT LIEBER

We consider the economic optimal control problem of emissions abatement with uncertain climate thresholds. The basis of study is Nordhaus' (1994) DICE model augmented for parameter uncertainty, uncertain climate thresholds [Keller et al. 2000], and parameter learning. The method of optimization is an improved version of Storn & Price's (1995) Di erential Evolution. The algorithm is modi ed to b...

Economics of tipping the climate dominoes

Greenhouse gas emissions can trigger irreversible regime shifts in the climate system, known as tipping points. Multiple tipping points a ect each other’s probability of occurrence, potentially causing a ‘domino e ect’. We analyse climate policy in the presence of a potential domino e ect. We incorporate three di erent tipping points occurring at unknown thresholds into an integrated climate–ec...

The Economics of Tipping the Climate Dominoes

Derek Lemoine1 & Christian P. Traeger Greenhouse gas emissions can trigger irreversible regime shifts in the climate system, known as tipping points. Multiple tipping points affect each other’s probability of occurrence, potentially causing a “domino effect”. We analyze climate policy in the presence of a potential domino effect. We incorporate three different tipping points occurring at unknow...

Economic Growth Assumptions in Climate and Energy Policy

The assumption that the economic growth seen in recent decades will continue has dominated the discussion of future greenhouse gas emissions and the mitigation of and adaptation to climate change. Given that long-term economic growth is uncertain, the impacts of a wide range of growth trajectories should be considered. In particular, slower economic growth would imply that future generations wi...
